Workmen’s Compensation Insurance is mandatory for all employers of labour in Nigeria for the benefit of their employees; this was backed by the Workmen Compensation Act of 1987 which stated that Employers should insure their workers who may sustain injury resulting in death or permanent disabilities in the course of their duties. The scale of death and permanent disability by this act are 3.5% and 4.5% of annual salary respectively while weekly benefits at the agreed scale is equally payable for a period not more than 24 months in the case of permanent total disability. Some medical expenses incurred in the course of treating the employee is also covered by this policy.
